Question about transferring tags from one car to the next...?

We currently have a Cadillac CTS, and can no longer afford the payments as well as our other bills. But before we purchased this car we had an Mistibishi Eclipse which works and runs perfectly... so although its going to completely ruin our credit, we are going to volunteeringly have the car repoed.

So my question is how does the process go with transfering the title and tags from one car to the next... *living in PA* is it just something we can do at a notery or do we need to go to the car dealership??

You can't transfer a title from car to car, only from owner to owner. The title lists the VIN and is specific to one vehicle, and one only.

REMOVING THE PLATE
After the title is transferred, the seller must remove the license plate from the car. The plate should never be given to the
purchaser. The plate should be returned to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles unless the seller plans to transfer it to another vehicle.

REGISTRATION
In addition to establishing ownership of the vehicle by transferring the title to your name, you will need to register it in order to
get a license plate and drive it on the highway. You can apply for registration on the same form used for the title application. If
you already have a Pennsylvania plate, you can transfer it to the car you are buying. For vehicles already titled in Pennsylvania,
you should complete Section F of Form MV-4ST to indicate whether you want a new plate or are transferring a plate from another
vehicle.

That's all that is on the web page. You aren't buying a new vehicle, but it looks like you could transfer the plate. Contact them and ask.

Just pull the tag off of the Caddy and save the owners card. Take the title for the eclipse and the plate to a notary. They might need to see the repo paper work on the Caddy.

Why not sell the Caddy "Take over payments" and try to salvage you credit. The buyer would get financed to pay your car off. Wouldn't make any money but it would save a black mark on your credit.

PA registration is like WV's. The plate is registered to the owner & not to the vehicle. So remove the plate from the Cadillac before they come to get it. Take the registration card from the Caddy to PennDOT or any place that can do registration transfers along with the information &/or title of the Mitsubishi, pay the transfer fees & transfer the plate to the Eclipse.
