This is different in every state. In NJ, for instance, you will get two plates.

This most likely will depend on where you live. For example, IN Texas you are required to have both front and rear plates, so you will get two.

In other states there is apparently no such law, so folks can use one.

As far as transferring, that should have already occurred as part of the application process to get custom plates. They will not issue plates for a certain vehicle, when there is already a registration in effect.

If someone were to steal your plates, you would report it, and get new plates. The old numbers (registration) would be flagged for law enforcement purposes, but it would no longer be associated with you or your vehicle.

Likewise, when you apply for custom plates, the old registration would be nullified, and from that point on, the old numbers would no longer be associated with you or your vehicle. For purely practical purposes, those numbers should be reissued for some time; how long, if ever, will depend on the state you live in.

It depends on which state you live in. For example, in Maryland, you are required to have two plates, for the front and for the back.

I have a personalized N.C. plate myself. I only got one plate, and a sticker tag did come with it. It was mailed to me.

If your vehicle requires 2 plates (front and back) you'll be issued 2 plates.

This varies by state... MOST now require front and back plates... some don't.

If you currently have plates on the vehicle... you are supposed to turn them in... or destroy them. You can't put them on something else. (possible exception of Missouri which used to allow you to transfer the plates to another vehicle just so you wouldn't have to try to memorize a new plate number... but I think that only applied to when you SOLD a vehicle and bought a new one... )

If your state has you put stickers on the plates... you'll get new stickers when you get the plates.

Depends on what state you live in. Also depends on if you are due for new plates. They usually try to have you keep the same tags & just transfer them for a certain amount of time or till the tags change for the state.

YES...CA state vehicle laws require "2" plates on a vehicle (front and back)...you will give them your "old" plates, in exchange for the "new" personalized plates...you will be issued new tags for the new plates with the new expiration month/yr stickers, and DMV with process the change to update your vehicle records and provide you with a new registration card..!!

In Michigan, you get one plate because we are only required to have our license plate on the rear and not the front. Where do you live? I forget how it works with the tags. I got my plate when it was time to renew so I got new tags.
My license, by the way, is: I AM NDN (Get it?)

go to your local legislator and they have forms you can fill out and less hassle.
