Ride new motorcycle to DMV to get title transferred & get learner's permit?

Now here's a catch-22. I just picked up a sweet new motorcycle - I at least consider it "sweet" since it's my first. And since I need a motorcycle to get my motorcycle license, I obviously don't have said license. I do, of course, have a valid driver's license (and a car). But since I got that bike, well, it almost goes without saying that I'm in no hurry to start up the car again.
So, here's the question. I want to drive the bike so bad - to get the practice, and because it gets 70mpg versus my car's 17 (that's better than a Prius!). I'd like to drive it wherever I can, but I need to get legit first. If I understand correctly, I have to have the registered vehicle with me when I go to transfer the title, so... shouldn't I drive it with me to DMV to get the title & registration taken care of, and to get my permit at the same time? Or does the vehicle actually not need to be present? In which case I'd still want to ride it, but I wouldn't have that fall-back of "well doesn't the vehicle need to be present?" if they ask how I got it here without riding it without a license ;)
May be silly of a question, but it's a darn hard one to search for...

Drive your car to the DMV, take your permit test (might want to get a book or look online and study first). Once you have your learners permit, then you can ride your motorcycle down to do the title transfer |

Not sure what state you're in but...
In Illinois, you just take your paperwork to the DMV. Take the written part of your bike test, and they give you a permit, which allows you to ride it to the facility to take the riding test. |
