STOLEN VEHICLE QUESTION?

Ok. so I'm pretty sure my neighbor stole a vehicle one night after he left a bar. It hasn't moved in two months, I've only ever seen him drive one car, and its not this one, and to top it off the alarm was going off as he drove up and parked it that night. I wanted to report it to the police but they were going to send an officer out and all of that and since I live in a college apartment complex I don't want to draw attention. I called the DMV and they argued saying that they couldn't release information like that and I simply told her that all I wanted to do was give her a tag number and a location and they could do as they pleased with it but she wasn't having any of it. Where can I type in a tag number and see if its stolen???

With the enactment of the Driver's Privacy Protection Act, a federal law, you as a private citizen will not get any personal information about a vehicle's owner- from any agency. The police will not tell you if it is stolen or not- you do not need to know that information.

All you can do, is report the vehicle to the police, either as an abandoned vehicle (if you do not want to incriminate your neighbor) or tell them exactly what you actually witnessed & let them take it from there.

As already stated you can't get any information about a car because the DMV doesn't give that information to private citizens. I'd suggest you just report an abandoned vehicle to the police. Don't give them any information other than you noticed the car has been sitting there for however long without ever being moved. You can probably even do it anonymously.

You could call the police and ask them to run the plate. They will tell you if the car is stolen. Or, call parking enforcement and let them know the car has been sitting there for 2 months. They will come out an investigate.

Either way, call the police or parking enforcement. You do not have to give you name to report the car. But do the right thing. If it is stolen someone is out there without a car and waiting for it to be found.

it is legal to call the police dept and give them the plate, they will tell you owners name but that is about all, you can tell them that you believe the unit was stolen and attempt to report it then, or if you live in an apt complex, i believe you have to tell the management about any cars you will have parked there so they might be able to get it towed and then maybe something will be done about it...good luck!
