Salvage vehicle (yes or no)?

Salvage vehicle (yes or no)?

I have never bought a salvage vehicle before and i never intended to, but recently i came across a 2002 chevrolet silverado 4X4 with a salvage title for $4500 the truck runs great and drives straight it only has 67000 miles on it. The only damage is a passenger door with a good size dent about a foot long (doesnt hinder door function), missing passenger side mirror, broken window on the passenger side extended cab, and several dents on the roof (looks like someone walked on it) other than that the truck looks great, blue book on this truck in good condition is $14000, the 10000 savings is my temptation any advice on this matter

It depends on where you are. In some states a salvage title means specifically "Parts only, can never be licensed or driven" while in others it means "Must be inspected and found road worthy to be registered" while in others it only means it's been totaled and sold again. So assuming you are in a state where you can get insurance on it, a license plate on it, and drive it, not a bad deal. Otherwise, no.

By the way, what is it really? Silverado (except in the 2007 model year) refers to a trim package, not a model. 1500 I assume?

My dad works at a junkyard and has bought vehicles from there and they have been good vehicles. I say go for it!!!

GO AHEAD AND BUY IT. $4500 on a truck that's worth $14,000? a passenger side mirror generally costs $50-$150, and dents can be overlooked. I'm sure the window doesn't cost over $500 to replace, so why not?

By the way, you wouldn't want to let me get it instead, would you?
Just kidding.

Yes, go for it! You could have the damaged repaired in time if you desire to.

nope. besides the point that you will be hard pressed to find another buyer, should you ever wish to sell- you may have a problem w/ insurance.
you will probably want comprehensive and collision coverage on the car (comp especially in case it is stolen). well- in the event of a "total loss" you will never get what you feel the car is worth from the insurance company. you will be getting a "salvaged" value for the vehicle.
if you do decide to get the car, consider having a mechanic (hired by you) come inspect the car 1st. there can be many problems you can't see, or don't notice just by driving it.
be wary.
best of luck to you!

Check with your department of motor vehicles find out what you have to go through to get the vehicle licensed. In most states you cannot put license on a vehicle with a salvage title it has to be repaired and inspected by the DMV and then issued a rebuilt title. Also they may not let an individual do this. In Illinois you have to be a licensed re builder with the state. There are also a lot of guidelines and fees that go along with getting a rebuilt title. It sounds like a good deal but if you cant get it licensed it may cost you more in the long run.

I wouldn't pass it up. All a salvage title means in many states is that some insurance company decided it'd be cheaper to just total it out rather than fix it. If you shop around, you could probably get a bunch of the body damage fixed so that it looks nice, for a fraction of the 10k you'll save.

If you drove it and seems ok I'd get it if you want it. Personally I wouldn't buy one just because if you ever want to sell it then it will be harder to unload. The price of a truck in good condition that you are referring to is one with a clean title. The truck with a salvage title is probably only worth 7-8K repaired.

Go to carfax.com find out why so cheap? Also if it sounds to good to be true it probably is . Good luck

The salvage title will make it difficult to sell later on when you want to reap the benefits of your project, But if you want to keep it as your driver more power to ya! Sounds like you'll get a decent deal but it may be better with a clean title.
