That's why it's important for the seller to sign and turn in the Release of Liability.
The ROL tells the DMV the buyer/seller names, addresses, date, purchase price and odometer. So even if the transfer gets stalled at the buyers end, at least SOMEONE told the DMV that a change is in the process, AND you're liability is released if the car winds up killing someone or is involved in some nefarious activity.

Make a condition of the sale that it takes place at the DMV where you will sign the title to them, and you will witness them transferring title into their name.. Also most motor vehicle departments have some type of "Release from Liability" form you should submit immediately after selling the car. |
