Should I go for my permit or wait and get my license?

Alright, so here is the story, and question.

I'm 17 and turn 18 on may 16th.
Here in Oregon once you turn 18 you can take the driving test and get your license right then.
However, with that being said, I don't have much driving experience at all.
My question is should I get my permit and practice up?
Or save myself some money and wait to get my license?

Permit-roughly $22.00
License-roughly $55.00

fyi...
I'm not too confident on driving just yet.

Safe driving is learned. In fact, just knowing how to drive period has to be learned. No one is born with the ability to safely operate a 2 ton vehicle. If you could not safely drive a vehicle at 12 or 13, what makes you think that you can now, if you have never taken any driving lessons or had been issued a permit so you can practice driving?

And to just be able to come in, take a written test, then be able to schedule your skills test without ANY type of driver's training or at least practice driving under a permit, that really shows a lack of being safety oriented on the part of the state of Oregon & potentially increase the risk to the safe drivers there.

You need to read further on down the page as to the penalties if you fail your skills test. If I was a betting man, and know for a fact that you have never driven a car before in your life on a public street, I would bet that you will fail your test if you go in there cold, with no experience what-so-ever behind the wheel of a vehicle.

**Note to self- put attorney on retainer when traveling to Oregon due to number of possible untrained & unsafe drivers there since it appears by the state law that there will be a great chance of being hit by one.**

If you have your parents car that will be insured to drive with a permit then definatelyl do it, practice all you can with your mom or dad, doesnt sound fun, but your parents will give driving tips, your friends with liscenses will only distract you. The thing is, the other cars are like the enemy, think of them as rude and asleep at the wheel and mom or dad can show you how people are not watching, dont care if they cut you off, and the more experience the safer you are at dealing with instant decisions we have to make as drivers. The odds are so stacked against you, for getting into a wreck in your first year. Always go the speed limit, fast driving might be funner, but those ticktes are super expensive, and they do not ask you why they just saddle you with huge fines and then the ins charges you extra on your insurance. When a friend offers to let you drive their car anytime in your life, ask if its insured, walk around and make sure its registered and that all the lights, including breaking lights work, I learned this the hard way :(
The more you drive the more confident you will get, and the better you will be able to make snap decisions so that possibly you can aviod accidents, Its not about how much the permit costs vs the liscence, its about being safe for yourself and also safe for all the other drivers around you.

Uh, how are you going to pass the driving test without practice? You can't just walk in and sit down behind the wheel and take the driving test. You need to practice, which requires a permit. Just because you turn 18 doesn't mean you're going to magically learn how to drive out of thin air. Get the permit and practice, otherwise you're probably going to fail the test.

=)
I would get my permit, I was so glad I did when I took the driving test.

Get your permit and practice up. I wish I had when I was younger. I didn't get my drivers license until I was 25 because I didn't feel that confident about my driving. Now I am older and still not that confident about my driving. Driving is important.

Safety! Safety! Safety! The more experience you will have, the better off you will be. I would get my permit first and practice as much as I can, then save money for you license. By the time you take your license test, you will be confident. I work in a Trauma ICU and I see the outcome of bad drivers. I rather be safe than sorry.
