Should I register my car in Tennessee or Texas?

you live in TX you register your car in TX. It is actually illegal to do otherwise. You get stopped you are screwed.

Brother-in-law, licenced in one state, car registered in another and insured in yet another. Got stopped for running a red light. Ended up in court and damned near jail. Had to pay a hefty fine and get all three to one state.

Oh honey, Texas is not the state that you really want to try your luck in. Keep in mind that when you set out on the roads, you've got police, state troopers, sheriff's deparment, AND rangers to have to worry about. You really don't want to be driving around here doing anything illegally.. they'll nail you, and nail you good. The fines are crazy and they'll impound your car for whatever reasons they can get away with! Yes, it's expensive to get the vehicles registered here, but keep this much in mind.. it won't cost you that much every year. You'll be paying LESS each year once you get that new resident business taken care of, so hey.. in the long run you save money, right? ;)

You have to pay the piper, you know? At least for most people, the insurance here is lower!

If you renew your registration in TN, but are resident in TX, you will be committing a fraud. Legally you have to get your TX licence, TX registration, and TX insurance. TN can actually only legally renew your registration while you live in TX under certain circustances, such as you being in the military posted in TX but keeping TN as your home.
You cannot use a post box in TN as a residence address. Homeland Security has new rules that affect all states since 9/11 that state licence documents have to show a residence address. You are quite welcome to receive mail at a box number, I know I do, but my registration and licence both have my street address, as we have similar rules in Canada.

Pay your fines and register it in Texas....or have it impounded when your ticketed here....

You should register it in Texas. You also have to have the insurance transferred to Texas and to do that you need to have Texas registration.

I can tell you that a fail to register vehicle within 30 days in the city I work is like $300, so go ahead and register before you get a ticket and have to pay $600...

the law says you have to register in the state you live in unless you have several residenses in other states...but in your case i would do what the law said this time as it seems you already have enough problems

Not complicated at all. If you live in Texas, that is where you will need to register your vehicle.
