My boyfriend and I are living together. We have only one car. Me being the primary user. I pay for gas, insurance, etc. The insurance is only liability so it is very inexpensive. The catch 22 is that his name is also on the title and on occasion he uses it for an errand or to pick up his friend for dinner on Friday, which is a few miles out of the way. Should I ask him to assist in maintenancece, gas, and insurance? What would be reasonable since I am the one using daily for work?

Why are you living with such a deadbeat? How did he talk you into paying for insurance and gas and maintenance on a car in his name? You should not be living together. |

Tough one.
To answer your question with what I'm given, I'd say "Yes". If he would like to use the car more often than once a month and his name is on the title, then he should help pay.
Suggestion for payment: when he brings the car back home, the gas tank needs to be full (whether you used some of the gas or not). If I ever borrow someones car, I make sure it is full of gas. It's a courtesy so they don't have to stop and it's the least someone can do for putting the wear and tear on the loaner's car. |

If you're living together and playing house, household expenses, which includes your shared vehicle, should be divided equally between you, along with rent, utilities, food, and everything else. |
