Should old people be allowed to drive?

I am classing a person as 'old' once they reach the age of 65!

I think they should be allowed to drive, but only after they have re-done and passed another driving test.

I think this is only fair. Roads / traffic would have changed so much since they passed their test, not to mention their eyesight failing, reflexes slowing down etc.

i'll be 63 in august..i have a perfect driving record..and i am not old...yes..some elders do have problems driving...like to slow..which is dangerous to others...but then what about the hot-rod idiots that havent grown up yet...that have to zoom in and out of traffic...when was the last time you heard of an ''old'' drunk driver..most are young to muddle age...if you ''young'' people are in a big hurry..then leave earlier and put that stupid cell phone away..i see more young drivers trying to dial and drive or talk and drive...what happened to using 2 hands on the steering wheel..how many elders do you see combing their hair or putting on make-up while driving...be careful..you will be ''old'' some day...if you drive carefully that is

I' m an old time biker & in the summer I get the Norton out & go riding Last year in the peak I was comming upto a sharpe left hand bend when this idiot passed me he crossed the line & was in a head on, his car flipped & ended up on the verge, the car he hit was driven by a lady in her 70s she was badly injured, the driver of the car that caused it was in his early 20s, it must have taken him ages to save enough box tops to get his D/L well he aint gunna use it no more! so whats age gotta do with it, a sh*t driver is sh*t wether they're 17 or 70. I did'nt get to my age being a bad driver me & my bike have an M.O.T every year! keep on biking!

They may be slow but generally most mature people drive very well....
its the younger generation who need supervision ...!
I'm only 39 and i sell high performance cars
so I'm not past it and I'm not old, so my opinion should count...

scuppo
As long as they are fit and healthy then why not, my grandad was still driving at 94 and still drove well. Never had an accident. Also I dont class 65 as old. I am sure you have offended many people.

swenson0
Of course they should - the real danger is the young
reckless drivers.

entidtil
Yes, age shouldn't determine a persons ability to drive. Driving skills should determine this

I am 64 I do not consider my self old ...I go to gymn 3 times a week ......have a younger wife no problem*s there .....look around you 65 is not in the least bit old.......most accident are caused by the 18 to 25 year olds

Groid
Yes - absolutely. Why not? They have more experience and as long as their sight and mental alertness is ok and they are generally in good health, I cant see why not. My mother is 73 and she is a much more skilled driver than I am. Plus, she can park a car in a space that a lot of us younger ones wouldnt attempt.

A lot of older people are not able to walk the same distances as they used to and rely on their car to keep their independence. If my mother couldnt drive, she would have to rely on others to do shopping for her or take her various places.

k
YES - as soon as you reach 70 your doctor has to sign a form every 3 years that goes to the DVLA to say you are still fit to drive.

There are a lot of people who you class as old who in live in rural areas, where the use of a car is ESSENTIAL - especially now as the Government and the Royal Mail are closing a lot of Post Offices (fortunately my village has escaped, otherwise you have to WALK 5 miles to the next Post Office, there is only 1 bus in the morning and it doesn't return until late afternoon).

if you still have the ability to drive that's OK,put once you are not sure about you driving habits, safety and eye sight, stop and take the bus.

turbine
it depend how old asl long they can drive.

i think everyone no matter what age should be taking tests every five years and the test needs to be alot harder than driving around for 20mins , they should be puttin in sudden stops , expecting the unexpected round bends overtaking etc
thats what drivin is about and old people over retirement age some are good drivers and have their wits about them but they really should have only 3 yr licences and eye tests etc every 2 years as compulsory

Charley
Old is not 65 my dear :}
old is like 75 +
my nan drives her wheel chair rubbishly
i'd like to see her in a car.
she'dmow someone down.

jamesdean2002uk
i think there should be a test every few years at some point,

i have seem so many near crashes where old (over 70 yrs old)

just dont look etc etc, especially on the motorway....

tonalc1
Of course. I think if they are getting a lot of tickets, they should be given a driving test.

However, their licenses should not be taken away by law after a certain age. The elderly need to keep their independence, and driving is one of the main aspects of that.

The things that cause the most accidents are drunk driving, driver distraction, driver fatigue, speeding, aggressive driving and the weather. These affect all ages.

WelshLad
Right and younger drivers are any better (meaning under 20)!!

KeWi21
Definately. As long as they have good hearing, sight.. etc.

magiclady2007
yes providing they are alert and fit to do so.

DippyD
I think once you are 70 you should be retested and then be issued with 5 yr licence so you have to be re tested again! There are a lot of competent older drivers but there are also lots who still think they can drive as well as they always have even though they medical problems!

Of course they should!! Unless they are weak, losing eyesight or have any medical conditions..

Yes. Unless they have any medical conditions.

well said ken d .

I think after a certain age they should be required to take periodic driving tests, with the interval between tests decreasing as the person gets older.

For instance- Take a test at 65, 68, 70,72,73,74,75, etc...

some "old" people are absolutely fine to drive while other's aren't. It's completely dependent on the individual person. But one thing is for sure, if a person lives long enough they will eventually not be fit to drive. I doubt there are any out there that have any business driving ove 100, for instance.

they should have their license checked, like have another test for the elderly!
just to make sure they can actually drive and stuff~~~
