Should old people be retested for a driving test?
|
I was hit by a 91 year old lady, I don't think she can see very well or even see over the steering wheel any more. At what point will it take to set boundaries in Florida. "Death"
Why does it take Death or a serious injury on someone else’s part?
Then they state decides if they can drive or not?

I would take it one step farther and have everyone that holds a liscense to be retested every five years. If they pass they get to keep their liscenses, if they fail they they better start liking public transportation. Too many people forget how to drive correctly and shouldn't be driving in the first place. |

Hey, I agree with you. I think yearly eye tests by the DMV should be issued to everyone over 65, and especially if they've had any accident. I know I'll get some flack for my answer, but I'm getting older myself, and wouldn't mind being tested. It would be for my benefit that I get tested, so that I don't hurt myself or anyone else either. And I also think that a DMV driving test should be given every five years after age 65, to find out if their reflexes are up to par. As we age, things aren't as sharp, so re-testing IS a good idea, and should be made a state law in every state. Write to your congressman. <*)))>< |

I am 63 and I really think that driver tests should be mandatory from age 70 on. Also every 2 years from then on.
A night blindness test given to all people over 60 once a year and if they fail they get a daylight hours only license. |

not just retested, retrained, if you had to take a new drivers test with all of the additions and modifications to the law, do you think that you could pass a strict test the first time out?? i bet thatshe could`nt. one of the things about getting older is a lossof eysight , dexterity and swift motor control, confusion comes easily.. the folks who were supposed to be watching out for that woman were not on their toes, so they should have taken away the keys, driving is a priveledge, not a right. |

I agree with what you are saying, but I find age alone is not a good enough point to determine a person's driving skills. It is difficult to put an age on when to be retested because some of our elders in their 60s, 70s and 80s are getting around better than many people half their age. In Georgia, we are required to take an eye test each renewal. This should be a good gage as to when to consider not renewing a license. Unfortunately, regardless of age, sight can worsen between renewals. How would you set boundaries? What would they be? Certainly, eyesight, but what else. There are many short people driving so you can't do it by height. New driving skills test every so often might be good. I would not put an age on this either because I see many young people who do not need to be driving. Just something to think about. |

They should definitely be retested often. For that matter, everyone should be retested every couple of years. There are many middle-aged drivers who are just as scary when it comes to driving on the road with them. |

I think that at 65 or 70, everyone should be retested annually and they should have to pay for it. Remember, Driving is a priviledge. The problem is that senior citizens make up a large part of the population and therefore have a lot of political pull. ..so this will never happen.
Personally, I want to keep driving as long as I can, but I would have no problem if I had to be tested yearly or every 2 years. |

In most states, an eye test is given whenever your license is renewed, and you are restricted to "corrective lenses" if needed on the license.
As to retesting, with a written and driving test, I don't think age is the indicator you need. I think anyone, regardless of age, that has over 6 points or a serious (by serious I mean someone was physically harmed, not necessarily just property damage) accident on their record should be retested. That would make it a level playing field for everyone. If you are 91 with a pocket full of tickets, your would get retested right along side the 16 year old with the same thing. |

yes they should. lots of families dont bother to get them tested as they dont have time to bother taking them where they need. You have to ask their doctor to have them tested. it is a touchy subject. |

I think they should be retested at a certain age . . i no of quite a few people over the age of 70 who have sight problems and are driving about . . . |

Everyone should be retested at set intervals.
I think you'll find the insurance companies aren't stupid,so check out the biggest risks. I'm betting 18-25 costs a fortune for insurance. Your more likely to get killed by a speeding youngish bloke, than some old lady |

Most insurance companies offer discounts to anyone over the age of 55 for taking a in class driving classes that most people would want to take advantage of and most states do have people retest as they get older. I would think Flordia would be one of them. |

Yes I firmly believe they should especially if they have already been involved in an accident, hard to say how long it has been since she has been tested last..... |

Does age matter when you get hit by someone driving a vehicle? Every day, the masses drive as though the traffic laws do not apply to them!
99.9% of all issues that take place on roads/highways, any place, are not ACCIDENTS! The issues occurred because one or more traffic rules were ignored/violate, by choice of the driver involved! Since the rules are violated/IGNORED, that makes the act INTENTIONAL! To intentionally cause traffic issues with a moving vehicle is either Vehicle Homicide or attempted vehicle Homicide, not ACCIDENTS!
Sir, give me an example of an ACCIDENT, without GOD being involved, and I will send you a $10 US Money order, if you fail, you send me a $5.00 money order! Proof, in either case, is if a traffic law/laws was or was not violated.
Please note that less than .07% of the US driving public is 89 years or older! So, what are the ages of the more than 100,000 traffic related issues that occur ever year on US roads/highways?
Have YOU ever violated any traffic regulations?
If you have and were lucky enough to not have caused neither harm nor death, does that make you an better than the driver that hit you?
Robbing the bank and not getting caught does not make you better than the robber that got caught! In the end, they are both bank robbers. |

a 91 yr old should NOT be driving
They already can't see not to mention the shrinking.
Yes, they should be tested.
They should make a law...no driving a car passed the age of retirement. |
