Should shopping trolleys be registered with the DVLA?

Whilst shopping at Morrison's recently, I endured a near-miss with another shopping trolley, whose operator pulled out in front of me without looking.
Surely these devices need regulating. At the very least, wing mirrors and indicators should be fitted, perhaps a simple test could also be devised to assess potential users.
Such a test should, of course, be necessarily expensive in order to weed out the peasantry.

My dear Sir Terrance, I fear the old hereditary weakness may be catching up with you. Shopping in a supermarket? Don't you have a housekeeper any more? Surely not even your very beautiful lady wife would go shopping in such a place! Time to call the doctor out to the house, and Harrods in with the necessaries. |

Yes, a trolley test would be most welcome. This may include tasks such as a vegetable display slalom, steering whilst yelling at a small brat who is screaming "I want!", strapping down recalcitrant toddlers into the child seat, manoeuvering a trolley with a defective wheel whilst it is fully loaded with 2 litre bottles of coke, beer and frozen pizzas, waiting patiently behind an indecisive biddy at the jam section, squeezing past two gossipy ladies hogging the aisle, using the chassis as an impromptu step ladder to reach a top shelf display, and finding the jar of capers. The test would end with an eye-queue test to see if one is able to judge the speediest checkout (invariably the neighbouring one), and remember one's PIN code when one has a headache. |

You only have to observe some peoples attempts to reverse into or out of a parking space to realise that their spacial awareness is very poor.To then allow those same people loose with a shopping trolley which is not equipped with emergency brakes, power steering or air bags is asking for trouble |

In the Madeitallupia region of Albania, Shopping trolleys have to be registered with the local authority and undergo yearly testing. Shopping trolley users have to undergo rigorous training and pass a proficiency test. Liability for accidents involving shopping trolleys lies with the operator and not the supermarket which has led to the development of a thriving shopping trolley insurance market.Policies cover the entire gamut that one would expect for car insurance including a replacement trolley if yours should be involved in an accident. |

Surely you mean Fortnum and Mason, and not that upstart Yorkshire Oik, Morrisons. I have had much the same problem when I send the cook into my local Waitrose to purchase the Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Perrier Water recommended for my new Bentley, don't you know? It is not so much the trolleys that need registering but the plebs who push them have no sense of direction as they just wander aimlessly loading their trolleys with stuff like pizza - whatever that is, instead of Foi Gras and Quails eggs. I will be posing questions in the Hise about this very thing.
Yours, Brigadier Claude Ponsonby Smythe (Mrs) Retired |

That means the trolleys themselves should all attend MOT's of which they would fail miserably. |
