I was just in a car accident and I have a chevy cobalt that was t-boned on the driver side by a HUGE gmc truck. the truck actually bent the inside of my door. The piece that is there after you open the doors and is between the front and back on the inside....lord i wish i knew more about cars....well right where the latch is that holds the door closed kind above it i guess, not the latch itself, is bent. i was told by a couple people that this means its totaled. does it? im sending my car to the shop this week and would just like to know...

well i was just curious because I had heard that if the total cost to fix it was more than half the value than it would be considered totaled. A guy had ran a stop sign and hit me a year ago, same car i know i have the greatest luck, and it was $9000 to fix and only worth about 10. My bf, whos a mechanic, looked at it and said it could be "banged out" but its a support area for the car...

If the costs to repair the car are more than the fair market value of the car, it's totaled. Only the insurance adjuster that comes to look at it can make that determination. There is no "if this is bent, it's a total" rule.

Good chance it's a write off, if there is that much damage then the whole frame and subframe is probably twisted.

Without seeing the car it is hard to be certain, but your description sounds like the car is a total loss (hence the word totaled). Keep that shop appointment, though. It will help you to make the claim against the other party's insurance, providing they were at fault.

Yea they will more than likely total it. However, it CAN be fixed but the value will never be very high as it will have what is called a salvage title. Good luck.
