Someone else driving and wrecked my car. What to do??

Returning from a long trip I let my buddies friend who I didn't really know drive my car (stupid mistake, I know). We end up swerving off the road to avoid an accident in front of us on a busy freeway and do 1800$ worth of damage to my car only. It seemed at the time from all the witness reports that the car in front of us would be liable and pay out of their insurance, but the cop wrote the guy driving my car up as contributing to a collision and said we were not in safe following distance. I filed with my insurance but since I don't have collision, and only cover other peoples cars if I hit them, they are gonna do nothing for me to pay for my car. WHAT DO I DO NOW? I'm a college student and my car is sitting 500 miles from home. Is my insurance adjuster (supposed to call me tommorow) gonna tell me that we can charge the guy drivings insurance or not? Or is the person who wrecked in front of us at fault gonna pay out of their insurance, since they caused a multi car pileup and us to drive off to road to avoid them? Should I pay to fix the car and demand my money from the party driving, and if so would I be able to take him to small claims court if he doesn't pay?? Is the insurance adjuster gonna be able to tell me anything within the next few days (since I can't just leave my car at a shop in South Carolina). Anyone got any solid advice. I myself have never wrecked a car so I dont know how this process works I'm just curious if anyone has any answers or advice as to where to go from here. Please help. Thanks.
