If you are based in the UK, then Endsleigh would be a good place to check - I used to work there.

They used to do a motor policy where a student could 'freeze' a policy - they would still pay their installments, but would be able to claim this back for the next year's premium at renewal, and could still get no claims bonus in some situations.

Plus they are understanding that you'd effectively have 2 addresses, home and uni - something that some car insurance companies cannot do, and may charge you to change it everytime.

Is the car currently insured on your parents policy? Usually there is a discount that can be added if you are attending school over 100 miles from home and are not taking your vehicle (distant student discount). Another option would be to just put comprehensive coverage on it during the time you're at school and then put full coverage back on it when you are home using it....if it's not just a liability only vehicle that is.

Just run your details through confused.com, and specify a reduced estimated mileage per year to take account of the fact you're away a lot.

yeah the low mileage way forward is a good one, espesh if you car is old, as many classic car policies are good for reduced mileage

There are several insurance companies that offer student discounts now. A lot of the well known insurance companies offer better rates for students who have great grades. Auto insurance companies need to do more things like this to insure are youth who do well and get an education have the ability to get affordable auto insurance coverage. In the past, auto insurance companies have considered drivers under 25 a high risk to them. Even worst than this, a lot of drivers under 21 have been considered as very high risk to them. It makes it almost impossible for our youth to get auto insurance they can afford. At times, some of our youth have to pay more for auto insurance than they do an actual car payment. With this being said, a high risk driver who finances a vehicle can pretty much expect to have 2 car payments in essence. The best thing any driver can do is to shop as many companies as possible to insurance the lowest possible auto insurance rate. It is a fact, that auto insurance policies can differ by as much as $600 per policy. Each driver needs to find the company willing to offer them the lowest price instead of settling on the first or second quote. Make sure you mention all the possible discounts you may have such as any driving courses, defensive driving, student discounts, good grades, safety features of the vehicle and etc. to get an even lower rate. And each driver would be best served to get quotes on the Internet, by telephone, in person and through agents to see which is best for them. Consider raising deductibles if you must in order to get affordable coverage and try to keep continuous auto insurance coverage at all times.
