Stuff stolen from car - claim on homeowner ins?
|
We had a bunch of stuff stolen out of our car, a dig. camera, a DVD player portable, flashlights.. and more. The car wasn't locked. Anyway, can I file this under my homeowners ins? It happend here at home and also, my daughters new bike was just stolen. Can that be claimed as well?

Generally yes, but it depends on your policy. Call your agent. |

yes but you still have to pay the deductable..ask yourself if the items taken are more valueable than the decuctable. |

Yes, because the only thing that is covered under auto policy's is items that are permantley affixed to the veh, such as stereos, etc.. GPS units, portable CD players w/car kit, are usally covered. I Pods are not, neither are cell phones.. Depending on the company I Pods may be, but most likely not. As for cell phones covered under H.O.'s if the charger isn't in the veh, i know dumb huh.. The stuff your talking about yes covered under home owners, but if you just bought it, like that day, and it was stolen, then maybe under home owners.. And yes the bike to... Now take this into thought, you'll be subject to your ded, and lose your claims free discount, and also your rates may go up around 20 percent depending on how long youv'e had the insurance. May want to hold off on doing it.. |

Yes.
The easy way to determine if it's auto or homeowners is this:
If you were to take the car - turn it upside down and shake it - if it falls out - it's homeowners. The camera, dvd player, cd's -all fall out. The in dash cd player would not fall out so that would be auto (if it were stolen from the car).
There may be sub limits in your policy that apply.
If the car was damaged too - then you would file for the damage to the car under the auto policy (comprehensive coverage) and your auto deductible would apply.
You would then file a claim under the homeowners for the personal property and your homeowners deducible would apply as well.
Make sure the you filed a police report. The insurance company will need that. Also - go ahead and get together any receipts or things you have to document what you owned. You may not have the receipt to the dvd player - but do you still have the owners manual or box it came in?
Your adjuster will be able to tell you more specifics about your situation. |

Probably -- you will have to read your homeowners policy and you most likely will have a deductible also. |

Yes, it is covered under your personal property coverage on your home owners insurance, it is subject to your deductible but it is covered, write a list of everything that was stolen and how much it will cost to replace each thing and then take it in to your insurance company.
If the window was broken in the break in that is covered under your comprehensive insurance on your auto insurance policy. Good luck and I am sorry that your stuff was stolen. |

YES YOU CAN BUT YOU WILL NEED PROOF AS IN RECEIPTS, POLICE REPORT AND YOU WILL NEED TO PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE AS WELL. |

Bad idea. They'll either drop you or raise your rates afterwards. |
