Your best bet here is to contact the local Secretary of State in your hometown. They can give you the most accurate information, as well as any of the local insurance agencies.
P.S. In response to the retired bus driver--
I do agree that the age of drivers seems a bit young, however, its not the age that I feel we need to worry about. I feel we need to have more drivers education and road time WITH experienced instructors to help our roads be a safer place to travel on.
Unfortunately I have seen many OLDER/ADULT drivers 18+ that act just as or more so immature behind the wheel than some of the 15 year olds.....:-( out there driving.....nuff said... |

Various GPS systems can be programmed to do the things you mention. The cost would vary depending on what system and features were chosen, and it would have no effect on your insurance rates. |

I would advise against this because if your teenager gets into an accident the data from such a system can be used AGAINST YOU in court. GPS systems monitor speed and direction but the newer ones are more sophisticated. Even cars these days have black boxes that can tell you when the brake was applied, how open the throttle was, etc...right before the crash.
Get an older car that does not have the ability to be big brother. |

Call On Star they have such a system. |

This would only work if there were a system that would enable the parents to press a button that would cause the engine to gradually slow down and eventually stop. After that it could not be started again for 24 hours. So if the kid went over a set speed, an alarm would go off at home, the parents could hit the button, and the kid suddenly finds he is losing power as the car rolls to a stop a minute or so later.
On Star actually has something like this now. If you have On Star and report your car stolen, they press a button and the engine slowly dies. Not a bad idea. The same thing could be used on a kid, with the exception of the addition of a transponder that would send speed information back to the parents' control panel. |
