i have only had my car a few weeks, and was enjoying parking it outside my house, where it is safe, but got home one night to find this car there, with all the rest of the street to spare, it hasn't moved in 4 days, i didn't know whether it had been abandoned, and i don't really know what to do about it? can anyone help?

I take it you are in the UK as I have Yahoo Answers set to show UK & Ireland questions only - I wish Americans would set their accounts to show USA questions only and not all English questions as it really gets on my nerves that they just assume all questions are posted by Americans.
Anyway, here's my answer...
When you say the car is parked outside your house I assume you mean on the public highway and not on your drive way. As long as the car is taxed, insured and not blocking access to your drive then the owner can park it there for as long as they want. They have just as much right to park there as you do. 4 days is not a long time at all, if it was 4 months I would understand your concern. You could contact your local police station with the cars registration number and they can check if it's stolen but when you tell them it's been there for only 4 day I think they will think you are just wasting their time.
I often see cars that stay in the same place for a long time. It could be that the owner doesn't use the car that much, has another car/bike, has gone on holiday, has been banned from driving, is in hospital or maybe the car has broken down - it could be anything!
I guess you live out in the country as I live in London and it's very rare to find a parking space outside my house, sometimes I can't even park in my own street, so you should consider yourself lucky that you can park so close to your house! |

You could report it as abandoned but it might not be. By the way, you don't have a legal right to park outside your own house although if you have a driveway then it cannot be blocked. |

Assuming you are in the US (other countries = other laws). Most cities have a 48 hour limit on street parking unless it is posted with other limits. THis 48 hour limit is rarely enforced unless someone complains or street parking is really congested.
Simply call your local PD or Sher. dept. and complain about the car. They will come out and mark the car and re-visit the street two days later. If the car is unmoved it will be cited and towed.
BUT..
1) Keep in mind that it is a neighbor's car. Sort of the do-unto-others type thing.
2) Its not YOUR parking place .. it is a public spot so someone else can just as easily park there. Keep that in mind..

my car stays stationary for days at a time.
Maybe the owner has several cars ?
Its its legal there is nothing you can do. The polcie will not put a sticker on it if its parked legally and isn't stolen. How would you feel if you went on holiday for 2 weeks with your mates, left your car near thier house and came back to find the police had impounded it ?
Maybe tell the police in case they want to do a check on it. |

check the tax,if its out of date then report it to the council.

Report this to your local police station not 999 say that you are concerned that the car as been there for some time and would they check it out just in case . IF the car tax is not in date then your local council office would be in power to remove this car from the highway. |

Unless there is a bylaw restricting the length of time a person can leave a car parked on a residential street, you can do nothing unless it is a stolen and abandoned vehicle. If the rest of the street is open, park a few feet forward or behind him, he is only taking up 10 feet of space, anyway. |

we had the same thing happen outside our house ;we have a small parking area just off the main road .enough for 3 cars with a squeeze;our neighbours and us .use it ;there is no other parking available ;well this car come and plonked there;for three weeks ;they were friends of someone futher down the road and went on holiday abroad ;we coud;nt do anything about it except get bxxxxdy annoyed.free parking you see..so if the car outside your house is legal ;you will have to ask nicely for him to move |

If it's not taxed,report it. |

If it has a tax disk that is in date, there is nothing you can do. You can only wait until the tax runs out, than report it. If he is in front of your driveway you could report it. |

The car might be moving, just parking there again before you get home. Try this, Get your hands on some yellow chalk. You know that 50 cent sidewalk stuff. Then go out and mark the driver's side front tire on the bottom and the street too. If the vehicle isn't abandoned the owner will move it. If it is then it won't move. That's when you call the po-po. When they come out to look, They'll see the chalk marks and assume that they've already taken that step. They'll tow it right away. |

Call the non emergency police number and report it, they will send someone out to put a notice on the car and check back a few days later.
If the car and notice are still there it gets towed.. |

report it, if its not taxed they put a big sticker on it and give the owner 7 days to remove it. |

The only way you can do any thing is call your local police station, if it is taxed and insured they might be able to do a lot.The other route is to contact local council and have it removed by them. |

I would ask about your neighbours and if none of them own up to it call your local police who will check where it is registered and if it has been reported stolen and remove it if necessary. |

Call the police. In many areas, a car which hasn't been moved in three days earns a parking citation. |

JJLICIOUS

report it to the police or your city or township. They will ticket it and tow it. |

That depends on the laws of where you live. In NY, after 96 hours (4 days) a vehicle can be declared legally abandoned whether it has plates on it or not.
Contact your local police agency and check with them. The car might belong to 1 of your neighbors. Also, if there aren't any parking regulations on your block, then it might be ok to park for extended periods of time. |
