I need to transfer my friends car into my name and get it legal, because he has lost his lisence. It was registered in PA as of last year, but has since ran out and now we are living in Maine. He is signing it over as a gift, but we have lost the title and havent been able to find it since moving! We can do a bill of sales, but I need to register it ASAP and I didnt know if its possible without the title. Could he go the the dvm and get something done to have it put into to my name faster without the title or are we going to have to wait on the title to come? The car is paid off and also its an 04 if that helps at all! Any advise I need to go outta state in two weeks and his car is in better shape then mine!

The DMV has a form for Duplicate Title REG 227, that you can use when you can't find original title. He needs to sign it, which releases his interest in the car. You sign the back as the new owner. You will need REG 262 which is a combo form with a bill of sale and odometer reading. As it's a gift you also need Statement of Facts form REG 256 to exempt you from the Use Tax. (In Ca you need to get it smogged, maybe not where you are) They will give you a registration that day for the car, but the new title will be mailed to you in 3-6 weeks. You'll pay for the transfer $15, plus the tags. They take cash or check. Most don't take credit cards. You will be legal while waiting for the title, as all the fees will be paid and the info is in the computer.
Remember: Registration or copy of registration is kept in car and title is kept in safe place like safety deposit box.
Make sure you have proof of insurance in your car too. |
