I own and run a UK driving school and I agree with what others have said, i.e there's no "legal" minimum number of driving lessons - and in fact there's no legal requirement to take any professional driving lessons at all.

It does make sense to get a driving instructor to have a look at the way you drive though, as unilke friends and relatives teaching learners to drive, experienced driving instructors know exactly the standards required for the Practical Test and have the knowledge and skills to teach you how to be a safe driver for life and won't pass on bad habits or poor driving practice.

Additionally, the driving test now includes an assessment of "Eco-Safe Driving". While not demonstrating these techniques will not result in a test failure, most people do not drive in an eco-safe manner because they don't know how to! An experienced driving instructor can teach you how to drive in a way that will save you money on fuel and car maintenace plus will have a less damaging effect on the environment.

The Driving Standards Agency (the government department who set the driving tests, employ all the driving examiners and regulate the driver training industry etc) have issued guidelines to help learner drivers have an idea of how much driving tuition they need on average to get to test standard. These guidelines state; "Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test." (source: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/PracticalTest/DG_4022483)

In practice though, everyone is different and learns at their own pace and so some people will need more training than this and some will need less...

My instructors have had pupils who have got to test standard in 15 hours and some who have taken 100+ hours...everyone is an individual and learns at their own pace :)

The best thing to do is to get an assessment of your driving done by a fully qualified and experienced driving instructor. They'll be able to tell you how many hours of professional tuition you need to get to test standard and will be able to work with your parents so that what you learn with them reinforces and consolidates what is taught on your drving lessons.

Good luck when you take your driving test :)

There's no minimum but I would recommend you have some professional lessons so you are prepared for the test, the techniques you need etc, and guidance for the theory test.

Scouse
There s no minimum but as a rough guide one for every year of your age before you are sufficiently competent take the test

There is no fixed minimum amount of lessons you have to have, as many people have already said

Take your test when both you and your instructor think you're ready

NB. Don't try and do it without having driving lessons - your parents will have picked up bad habits over the years and will have passed them on to you...you need an instructor to "smooth the rough edges"!

take at least 1 lesson from a proper instructor, they will tell you if ur up to date, ur parents probably done an excellent job but it is so different now, every1 has a different level of common sense and some still pass lol, best of luck

Psychodelic Chicken
they havent set a limit on that yet, but i have heard talk about them bringing in a minimum, so i'd take my test as soon as poss

There is no minimum number of hours you need to take. It all depends on your ability, in fact you can take the test in your parents car if you wish. Just make sure you are up to test standard and the car meets the requirements--see DSA web site.

yeah there is not really any minimum requirments
whenever you feel your ready and also your driving instructor thinks your ready he will put you through for your test

but watch out because some driving instructors say ur not ready just to get some extra cash lol trust me it happens!

I Am Not Really Sure,
To Be Honest I Think You Can Do It When Ever You Feel Ready, And Your Instructor Doesn't Mind.
But I Think The Average Is About 37-40 Lessons.

Hope It Can Be Of Use x
