A vehicle that does NOT require collision coverage will be your biggest cost-saving move. This would encompass any vehicle that has a low enough value that you don't feel collision coverage is necessary (collision is what pays for damage to the car if the driver is at-fault for the accident).

Additionally, vehicles that don't require comprehensive will be cheaper to insure as well (comprehensive pays for damage by theft, vandalism, fire, trees falling on the car, window rock chips, etc).

Most people that don't carry collision choose also not to carry comprehensive, although I always like to point out that comprehensive doesn't cost nearly as much as collision, and comprehensive is little impacted by the driver since the stuff comprehensive covers are stuff that aren't really your fault whereas collision covers accidents that you are at fault for. For young drivers, elderly drivers, and people with tickets and accidents, you'll find that the cost of collision coverage is much greater compared to comprehensive.

Beyond that, you'll find that 2-door cars will nearly always cost more to insure than their 4-door counterparts. Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas tend to cost more to insure than Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys, for example. Smaller engines tend to be cheaper on insurance as well, with 4-cylinders typically costing less to insure than 6-cylinder versions of the same vehicle. This holds true for most family vehicles, though for trucks and large cargo-type vehicles a larger engine doesn't necessarily equate to a more powerful or faster car and thus engine size is not as crucial.

Safer cars also can cost less to insure, though this is true primarily for newer cars with safety features like electronic stability control and all sorts of airbags, and as mentioned above you probably wouldn't want to get a newer car when looking to save costs :P

In addition, domestic vehicles are usually less expensive to insure as are 4 door cars, 4 cylinder motors and minivans.

reliable sedans. Ask the insurance company if there are any tests he can take to lower his monthly rate... mine let me take an extra driving and online test to knock off over 100 a month.
