What are the best ways for a new, young driver to get cheap(ish) car insurance?

I have been looking online on countless insurance websites and comparison sites and the lowest quote I get to insure a 689cc Smart ForTwo is around £2000. That is almost as much as the car!!
The cheapest quote I have so far is from DirectLine (£1800).
I mean, seriously, all I want this car for is to travel back and forth from college because the public transport is so unreliable. I know it's going to be high because there are so many male chavs who drive around hitting everything and making claims all the time, but, its a Smart car! Not exactly a chav-mobile!

What to do?
I'm going to take the PassPlus, btw.

Taking the PassPlus will help with some insurance companies but not all.
All you can really do is shop around.
It is a simple fact of life these days that insurance companies will boost the premiums for new young drivers.
I am surprised though that you are being quoted that much for a Smart.

You've got the right idea getting a car with engine smaller than 1000cc but Smart Cars are a higher Insurance group than others of that size.
If you did a search on something like a Fiat Cinquecento or Seicentoyou'lll see that they are cheaper as not so high on insurance group.

My advice for you is to start with a cheap old bandger and do it 3rd party fire theft.
The reason for your insurance being so high is the you a high risk under 25.

Sell your car to your parent, who can then insure it, with you as a named driver, it should be a lot cheaper. May be more difficult to arrange if you are living away from home, but the same principle could apply with any other adult responsible driver.

Sorry mate, but the fact of life is that there is no such thing as cheapish insurance for a new young driver. The value of the car you buy has little relation to the insurance cost - a 500 quid banger can go out and slam into a 90 grand Bentley just as easily as a brand new car can.

Whatever you do, don't listen to the people telling you to insure it in your parents names - it's called Fronting - it's fraud (obtaining a cheaper premium by lying about the main user of the vehicle) and if you're unlucky enough to need to make a claim it will invalidate your policy making it pointless!! Do your Pass Plus, get your 1st years ncb and then you should see the cost drop a bit.

Maybe it's your sterotypical attitude that makes the insurers think you are younger than what you say you are. Youve got your car, now theres not a lot you can do about it.

For automobile insurance the most efficient way to get a great quote is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you pick similar policies with the same deductibles, car type, zip code, etc so that all things are a good comparison.
