some people say if your on comp you can legally drive another persons vehicle (even if your not named as the registered keeper or on the insurance) with the owners permission etc but sometimes i hear different stories, so confused, need help.

autoinsurance.undonet.com - try this one. I have their car insurance and, as I know, they can provide such a service. |

you hear different story's because policy's are different,,,depends on what you buy...most go for lowest price...they usually cover LISTED drivers....READ YOUR POLICY or ask agent.. |

As per the first answer, but I pretty much guarantee that if your fully comp policy allows you to drive other cars, you would be limited to third party cover & the car would also need to registered in someone else's name & be covered by it's own insurance policy - you can't use your policy to just drive any random car, or a second car of your own. |

You CANNOT take it for granted that you are covered to drive someone else's car, despite myth to the contrary. You must read your insurance bumph carefully.
If it is permitted, there will be conditions applied which will include that it cannot be owned or leased by you, that it must already be insured, and, usually, in an emergency only. This is because the insurers have cottoned on to little Johnny with his Corsa insurance trying to drive daddy's Ferrari. And you will only be covered for third party risks. |

Most company's now allow you to drive another vehicle on a 3rd party basis if your fully comprehensive, however the vehicle your driving must be insured under its own policy. This rule is usually for drivers over 25yrs old. |

Hello
If you have Full Comp then most companies will cover you for a car that you have borrowed with the owners permission as long as it is not hired.
But you may drop down to 3rd Party Only.
You will probably show the first part on your certificate but need to check schedule about what cover you would have.

Whether you have comp or TPFT doesn't matter. It all depends on the certificate of motor insurance.
If it states "The policyholder may drive a motor vehicle (or motorcycle) that they do NOT own and is NOT the subject of a hire purchase agreement with the policyholder" then the policyholder ONLY may drive another car. If this phrase (or one similar) is not on the certificate then the benefit has NOT been given.
Cover is third party only and only applies whilst the vehicle is being driven. |

My understanding is that comprehensive policies allow you, as the insured, to drive another unspecified vehicle but only insured for third party risks. You may have the option to contact your insurer to request temporary cover on the second vehicle on a fully comp basis but with any terms or excesses that they may make. |

It depends on your cover!
Some companies will give you 3rd party, Fire and Theft on the other person's car ONLY if you're over 25 (and your policy started AFTER your 25th birthday), so make sure you check that.
Otherwise, most comprehensive cover will allow you to drive someone else's car, giving you 3rd party, Fire and Theft cover (so it won't replace or repair the car if you crash it, but will sort out whoever you crash into) only. You won't ever get comprehensive cover driving someone else's car, unless you take out your own insurance.
Also, a really important point - you need the car owner's permission to drive it (not whoever has comp insurance on the car) in order to be eligible for any sort of cover! |

Some policies will allow you to drive someone elses car with their consent, however, where it is permitted, 3rd party cover only, is provided. |
