What are the rules about getting a check in lieu of repairs with an auto accident?

I was involved in a fender bender that was not my fault. Someone backed out of a parking space and hit my driver side door. I drive a Camaro so it's all door! The estimate I received was for $1500 through Geico insurance which we both have. Anyway...I want to get a check in lieu of repairs and am wondering what the rules are. I am still making payments on the car.

due to the lienholder on the vehicle and that you are both insured with the same company they may issue the check with you and the lienholder on it. Some states require it for a 3rd party, and definitely for a 1st party (you're the insured).

Let your adjuster know and see what they say.

Take the check and do as you wish. GEICO's obligation under a liability settlement is only to pay YOU for the damages. What you do with the money is up to you.

Many insurance carriers are getting away from 'cash outs' on repairs. Especially if the vehicle is still financed. You may get away with cashing out but the check will more than likely come in both names, yours & the lienholder.

you can do whatever you want with the money

Your check may be written to you and the lien holder (whoever is financing your vehicle). You might not get that opportunity. Also your car will just have further depreciation.
