What car insurance coverage is actually necessary?

And how much of each do you really need?
Additional Details

Florida's minimum legal coverage is $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL).

Bodily Injury Liability coverage pays for serious and permanent injury or death to others when you cause a crash involving your automobile. Your insurance company will pay for injuries up to the limits of your policy and provide legal representation for you if you get sued. In particular, your company pays for injuries caused by you or members of your family who live with you, even if they were driving someone else's vehicle. It may also cover others who drive your automobile with your permission. This coverage also provides you with legal defense in the event you are sued by the injured party.

Damage liability coverage pays for damages you or members of your family cause (and are liable for) to other people's property in a crash involving a motor vehicle.

You are not required to carry coverage for your car to get it fixed if you cause an accident, it gets stolen, vandalized, etc. So if you are willing to assume the risk of losing your car you can skip full coverage or comprehensive coverage.

Legal and necessary are two different things. If you are found at fault in a serious wreck $10,000 is not going to pay for very much. You will be sued for what is not covered and might have a lien put on anything you own or will ever own, or have your salary garnished for the rest of your life.

A three mile commute will reduce how much your insurance will cost. Ask for a limited use policy (less than 5,000 miles per year). My advice is to buy as much as you can comfortably afford but at least $100,000 liability. Don't quit eating to pay for insurance but don't bet your future that you won't cause an accident either.

depends on where you live mostly, crime rate, storms and such

Justus, For car insurance the quickest way to get a cheap quote is do a policy comparison. If you choose the same coverage amounts, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zip code, auto make and model, mileage and driving history to make sure you get accurate comparison. To get mulitple auto quotes, go to http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare the major auto insurance companies.

The law requires only liability. But it might vary by state. Some states call it third party liability or something else.
