Hi John small cars like ford FIESTA or vauxhall CORSA. it depends what you need it for. are you likely to cart stuff about so might you need an estate? anything volkswagen is good -posh end of the market like POLO or GOLF. The diesels are excellent but expensive. SKODA's have come a long way and are really volkswagen underneath - having vw engines and the like so if you need an estate i'd go for OCTAVIA diesel. you don't say what your budget is. this would be the upper end. Always try and pay AS MUCH as you can afford. you wiil always be paying out for an old banger. in the long run a newer car is1] more reliable 2] likely to be more cost effective. |

The usual corsa's, fiesta's and polo's are all good for beginners. However they all have the same sort of small car problems, if I was to recommend a cheap but reliable car I wold suggest a MK3/Mk4 golf. Not the cheapest of cars but they hold there value and they are a little larger than the usual small cars.
