You need to defend yourself and prove to the judge that you do not owe the money being sought. I'm assuming when you say "I am not guilty" you mean that you do not owe the amount. Guilt or innocence is not established in a small claims court, only if you must pay or not. If you choose not to show up in court, a judgement will be entered against you. |

Small claims court doesn't establish guilt, it's not a criminal proceeding. Small claims court establishes fault and determines liability. You'd better show up and bring any supporting evidence you might have. |

You don't have to be guilty to be called to small claims, only to owe someone money or be illegally withholding property from someone. The judge will hear evidence from all parties, and make a decision based on the facts. |

First, you are not guilty or innocent, you are either liable or not liable in a civil court.
Just appear with any documents or witnesses that are pertinent to your case. Be prepared. Let the plaintiff tell their story, don't interrupt them. When it is your turn, present your facts.
