What do you do when your license plate is stolen?

First, report it to the police....like yesterday! People steal plates to put on stolen cars, or cars they plan to use in crimes. They think they're smart and no one will figure it out. The police will probably tell you to go to the DMV. I'd be willing to bet that you could get new plates w/o charge is you have a police report to back up your claim. If you do have to drive the vehicle, put the front plate on the rear. Worst case is they get stopped and the stole plate pops up on the cop's screen. As for prevention, you can buy screws with special heads that require something other than a screwdriver to get them off. Honestly, once you put plates on a car, how often are you going to need to get them off. Hope the info helps.

you better report it stolen. If they use it in a robbery guess where the cops are coming first. DMV or Secretary of State will give you new ones. They might charge you though. Call first

In my city/state you call the local police dept and file a police report as stolen. Then you take the report to the local DMV and then you get another tag for a small fee............md

if it was me i would call the DMV. and report it so your name is clear of the plate and then ask them what to do about another plate if you have to buy another or get a replacement good luck!!!

Plates come in two's. you can't get a matching one for the front. Turn in the one you have.
Go to DMV or your local AAA Auto Club also has plates.

call the police, report the theft, go to the DMV pay their fee for new plates and they will issue you 2 new plates. The remaining one you have now will be no good

Take your remaining plate to the DMV and turn it in and report it as stolen. And get a receipt for it. Then apply for new ones. In NJ the call it new metal. It will be a different plate number, but they will give you a new registration to match the new plate. By turning in the one plate relinquishes any responsibility to the plates. If someone uses it for illegal purposes, has an accident or anything, you will not be held responsible for what happens.
Unfortunately, there isn't too much you can do about it. It happens all the time.
