MOT and any old ones so to check mileage
lose of fluids or fluids mixing
the panels line up
wear on tyres
vin numbers all match up
number of owners and how long the last owner had the car.
ask why it is for sale
any service history with stamps
any parts bought can they prove with bill of sale.
good look under neith see if it as been welded or needs welding

Mileage and service history

I don't normally look the car seems to find me. Go into have new brakes shoes replaced and come out with a new car its a bad habit. Body work must be excellent, prefer low mileage, regular serviced, not too much wear and tear on the pedals. A reasonable price with tax, mot and a warranty.

wear and tear. ie you get what you pay for
mot to match the milage
the more reciepts the better looked after
and over spray ie paint where it shouldnt be,
take your time and look every where inside and out especially under the rubber seals.

First thing; Style, it has to look good, then all the usual boring stuff like condition, service records etc ( I never buy new cars, they lose so much value so quickly ) Personally I don't care about fuel consumption, unless we're talking only 10-15mpg, or insurance, since I'm a jammy git with 75% no claims discount!
The next car I get may well be an old S-class Merc or Jag, because they offer so much for so little money.

This car has a lot of similar ones in the area. There is a choice of two or three dealers for service and parts.

It is a silver colour. Not pink or orange or violet, and certainly not beige!

The car disappears in a line of traffic, the police do not see it. In a car park, any thieves are not attracted to it. I have quite enough attitude of my own without my car expressing it too!

My criteria are these:

Does it have four tires in decent shape?
Does it have an engine?
Does it have air conditioning (need it here)?

And, can I purchase the car and keep it running for an average of $1000/year?

(If I buy a car for $3000, then I have to keep it for three years before I throw {or give} it away.) This keeps my cost fairly fixed and if I go over that (pay $4000 and keep it six years) then I'm happy. This has worked for me for the past 30 years just fine.
