when I was 16 I was driving a 10-11 year old car - only had liability coverage - and it was about $300 every 6 months (and that was about 10 years ago) in the state of SC |

A LOT. Like a BAZILLION DOLLARS a month.
Seriously, at 16 you are right in the highest risk age group, as your age group tends to have more accidents and more severe accidents than any other age group.
Insurance rates are set by many things, chief of which is your age, then your type of car, and any past mishaps or tickets. Your rate is also based on your geographical area as well, so if you live in an area that has a very high percentage of teenage wrecks, you'll pay even more.
I can't ball park it but if your parents add you to THEIR policy, which they will have to do when you get a license, they will probably pay 100-200 or more dollars extra a month. Get a ticket and it'll be even higher. Get into a wreck and they could get their policy canceled and you'd have to go with very expensive and high risk insurance. |

I had a Honda Civic J-spec when I was 16. The insurance was $455/mo. Then I had a Toyota 4x4 Truck. The insurance was $318/Mo. My insurance never really came down a lot until I was 25. After that I was able to insure most vehicles for less than $75/mo. If you put yourself on the vehicle as a part time driver with, say, your parents, you will save a great deal of money. |
