Current Registration & the ID card for your insurance. Thats all that is required.

In Texas all they ask for is you insurance and driver license the registration is done annually and the sticker need to be displayed on the windshield. The driver license is preferred to be on person as you need it for ID purposes also.

When I was in Cali back in 1999-2000, we were required by law to have a current driver's license, regestration, and proof of insurance. Here in Tex, we are the same thing.

Proof of registration and your insurance card.
Driver's license will be asked when you get pulled over.
Keep 1 insurance card with the drivers license and the other in the glove box with the registration.
You don't have a current tag/plate on your car if the registration isn't current--if that's the case--you're going to get a ticket and possibly another if where you live wants you to have a current City tag.
It's like this for the most part in many places of this Wonderful Country We Live In!!!!!! And I'm grateful for the times that City stickers (where I lived) when I was stopped, I could tell them I lived outside the City Limits and didn't require a sticker--LOL!!!

Generalized documents are proof of insurance cards and car registration. Miscellaneous items are Emergency Contact card in glove box in case you are unconscious and a disposable camera if your cell phone does not have a camera.

In case of accidents, pictures are the best story tellers.

What you should NOT keep in your car.

1. Driver's license on you as it is quite easy to break into vehicles and Identity Theft has become rampant in this country. Keep it on your person

2. Policy Declaration Page of your insurance coverage levels. Keep it at home. If you have a claim, your claims adjuster will have computer access to your coverage limits. Should you accidentally cause an accident and you are unconcious, then the other party can see what your limits are and sue you accordingly. We don't want them to have too much info.

3. Deed title to your car. This is proof you own the car. That should be held in a secure place to prevent theft.

4. Social Security Card

5. Anything pertaining to you and where you can be located, including your personal phone numbers

Here in Colorado that is addressed twice in the Colo.Rev.Stats.

In the motor veh. section they say that all motor veh. must carry.

BUT the insurance section says that insurance must be in force but that proof need not be carried.

The two sections counter each other.
