What does an SR-22 do exactly?

My license is suspended so when I went to get purchase insurance the guy at the insurance office gave me an SR-22 and told me to take it to the DMV and that my license will be reinstated. Is this true? I still owe $1600 for a ticket to the DMV (failure to appear, it's now in collections). And what exactly does a SR-22 do?

The ticket was originally for driving without insurance.

SR-22 is normally a 3x5 piece of pink paper that gets filed with DMV/DPS (depending on where you live) CERTIFYING that you have liability insurance and makes an insurance company responsible for notifying the governing body if your insurance ever lapses.

If the no insurance ticket was your ONLY violation, once you pay off the fine, your license should be reinstated. Depending on the State where you live, you will need to keep the SR22 in force for 2-3 years.

the SR22 filing will guarantee the state that you carry insurance and if
you let the insurance lapse the insurance company will notify the state and they will revoke your license and lock you up

The SR-22 will prove to the DMV that you have valid insurance.
The DMV has no other way to know for sure!
You cannot get your license without it!
