What does the vertical set of numbers on a driver's license mean?

What does the vertical set of numbers on a driver's license mean?

I'm currently filling out an application, and I see "license number" but it has an s.... and i see a vertical column of numbers that border my picture, anyone know what that is?

You don't say what state you're in, but I've shown you the one from Texas below. On the DPS site they call it a DPS Audit Number. Beyond that I can't tell you what it's for. When you go to Texas DPS site below, just click on continue and it will show you what I'm talking about.
