No. Where teens and new drivers are concerned, if he's not on your policy, he will not be covered. Some policies will cover a driver who is not on your policy when that person must use your car for an emergency and oftentimes that coverage is backed up by the policy the driver himself has in place. But in your son's case, it's not as though he could be considered an occasional user such as a friend or other family member who might use your car once. He is a member of the household itself. And in your described scenario, he would be an uninsured member. So if there's an accident, the insurance company will not pay out for any damages.

If you do not inform your insurance company that your son is driving and he gets into an accident with your car your insurance will not cover it becuase he's not on your policy as a driver and therefore anything that happens won't be covered .

Nothing if he doesn't ever drive it. If he does, he isn't covered. Besides, when you signed up for insurance, you signed that you agreed to inform them of any changes that would impact your insurance risk. Having a 16 year old with a license sure meets that definition. Tell them, and add him now. Yes, your rates will go up, but you have to do it.

Not likely. You could also be ticketed for allowing an uninsured driver to operate your vehicle. You also get to pay all costs if he is in an accident.

Only if he is using his permit. He is then covered under occasional driver. Once he gets his license he needs to be put onto the policy as a licensed driver on the vehicle. If he gets pulled over or gets into an accident without it you are both going to be in big trouble.

It really depends on the company and your good standing with them, but I wouldn't count on them covering a claim. They are certainly not required to pay the claim.

Bottom line: If he drives your cars regularly and/or lives in your home, he needs to be added to the policy.
