My mom put a car's title and insurance in her name for her bf last year, and they broke up recently. He is not cooperating to put the title in his name, and she doesn't want it on her insurance anymore - she doesn't want the car at all. She doesn't have the keys, doesn't know where the car is, there is no loan, just the car a 1970 Buick convertible.

If her name is on the title & registration then she is considered, by law, the legal owner of the car & can do what she wishes with the car- including selling it or sending it to the car crusher. She could even report the car as stolen if she wanted to.
If he will not do the transfer of the title/registration, then she can just cancel the insurance & go to DMV, tell them what the situation is & see if they have a better solution. If not, cancel the registration too. |

As long as your mom still has the vehicle partly in her name, she can be held responsibile for any accident. The best thing to do is to contact DMV, explain that the vehicle is missing, and ask them what to do. It is possible that she could apply for a duplicate title as it is currently registered. Then she could "sign over" the title to her ex bf only. That would alleviate her responsibilty. She would, of course, have to send him the new title. Each state is different, so you would need to talk to DMV to find out if this is legal. |

The name the vehicle is titled in does not matter. What matters is the name the vehicle is registered in. If the vehicle registered in your mom's name, she just has to cancel the insurance & then go to the Motor Vehicle Dept. & tell them she wants to cancel the license plates. |

Cancel the insurance policy on it. Depending on the state, that will prevent the car from having it's registration renewed and, as an added bonus, the guy driving it around can be cited for driving without insurance. |
