The answers to your question really depend on the state in which you live. In most states in the US, insurance is a legal requirement for any vehicle driven on the roadway. However, there are a few states that do not require insurance, but instead require you to accept the financial responsibility if something happens. The only states that I know of that have this system in place are Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

Regarding an accident, as far as I know in all states which require insurance, even if you are found not at fault for the accident, that all changes as soon as they find that you have no insurance. Where insurance is a legal requirement, the vehicle should not be on the road without it. So, if the vehicle was not there the accident would have never happened. You would then be responsible for any applicable fines related to driving without insurance and the cost to repair both vehicles as well as any medical bills resulting from injuries sustained during the accident.

If you are not 100% sure that your state does not require insurance, check with the local Department of Motor Vehicles and they will be able to tell you, or check with local law enforcement.

You will get an expensive ticket for driving without insurance, and the whole accident scene can be put toward you since you wont' have an insurance, but it's not necessary for you to pay depending on how the accident occurs, but you will still have to pay a lot

Yes, it is illegal to drive without insurance. If you cause an accident and have no insurance, you will be sued.

I have a family member who works for a large insurance company. She was telling me about man other day who had his wages garnished for FORTY YEARS for causing an accident with no insurance in the 1960's.

Depending on the state you can get a ticket or your license suspended. As far as an accident is concerned the at fault driver is liable if they have no insurance.

Where I live it is illegal to drive a car without insurance. Regardless of the case if you are driving without insurance then you are the careless driver not the other party.

This can increase depending on the severity of the crime. You can be banned for it quite easily, particularly if other factors are taken into account. For example, if the police officer who stops issues a penalty for a bald tyre and a speeding offence or a dangerous driving offence, you are likely to be banned for totting up (too many points).

If a driver hits you while you are uninsured, you are likely to be treated as above by the police. However, it does not stop you from getting a payout if the other driver is at fault in the accident.
