What happens if your car insurance is cancelled due to non-payment?

In many States it's illegal to drive without insurance. Usually when your policy is canceled your lien holder (bank) will slap a very expensive policy on it to cover their interests. If there is no lien holder then you are probably on your own. Call the bank if you have a loan on the car or the DMV and they can explain the consequences in your area. If you get in an accident without insurance it could cost you dearly.

In Nevada, and some other states, your insurance promptly notifies DMV and they suspend your plates and send you a citation for driving without them in the mail.

If you do not pay your insurance then the insurance company notifies the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). The DMV then notifies you that they are suspending you drivers lis. You should either turn in the tags or pay the insurance or get a new carrier fast. If a police officer see your vehicle and knows that this vehicle has no insurance then YES a Police officer can and will remove your tags and some state police get print outs of their local areas of the addresses on tags that have expired or no isureance and if they have the time they will come collect the tag

No, they don't take your plates. They report you to the DMV for not having insurance and what they do with you depends on your state. I'm sure there will some rediculous fee charged. If you don't pay that, you may face jail time or license suspension.

They cancil your policy, and if you are caught driving without insurance, then you are charged. Just pay it and you will be fine.

In many states having your insurance canceled for non payment is reported and your license to drive is then suspended. If you are driving and are caught your vehicle can be impounded and your plates seized. Never let your insurance lapse for no payment. Some companies will let you reinstate, but some will put you in high risk because you don't currently have insurance.

It's the same in every state. Your license plates have nothing to do with your insurance.

If you don't pay for your insurance, nothing happens. You don't get in trouble or anything. You pay for the month in advance with your insurance company, they do it so if you miss a month you don't owe them anything. You just start paying again when you want protection again.

However, you can't drive your vehicle without insurance. But that's the worst of it. You'll have yoru car and everything and you don't get written up for not paying.
