What happens to your 'no-claims' when you get rid of your car?

What happens to your 'no-claims' when you get rid of your car?

I am about to scrap my car after many faithful years' service and I was wondering whether my accumulated no-claims discount will just sit in 'limbo' till I get another vehicle - which might be some considerable time hence - or whether I'll have to start from sctratch again.

IN the UK your NCB usually lasts two years while not being used or possibly three years if you go back to the same company. Keep your current insurance document as proof of NCB and when you get a quote for your new car tell them that you have x years NCB but you haven't used them for x amount of time and they will say if it is acceptable. You will probably have to send a letter in saying you haven't used your NCB on any other vehicle in that time.

Most companies have a set period of time after which you lose your no claims. My insurance co. allows 2 years. I think some allow up tp 5.
Check with your insurance company.

Depends on the company because each company has its own set of guidelines

Your NCD can be used against a future policy for at least 2 years. Some insurers will use it for up to 3 years. After that, it's lost. Make sure you keep proof of your last NCD.

You would still get the no claims discount since you didn't have any for x amount of years. You may want reduced coverage in case you rent in the interim, some people do in New York who cannot afford to own or store cars.

Once your insurance laps, it starts over.....but you still will not have any reported claims.

I would phone your insurance company and query it with them as I think that they would hold your NCD for a limited amount of time. And if you then proceeded to take out another insurance then it wont affect your NCD.

Generally speaking, NCB is valid for 2 years from expiry/cancellation in the UK. If the NCB does expire however, provided you have a clean driving record, you are likely to receive an introductory NCB equivalent to the maximum anyway.

Keep your present insurance documents and produce them when you next insure a vehicle. Your No claims should then be transferred to your new policy. However this may not count if you get convicted of a driving offence between lapsing and renewing your insurance. For instance if you were convicted of an offence driving someone elses vehicle and were covered by that vehicles insurance.

With todays competitive insurance you may find an insurance company that may refuse to transfer your no cliams bonus, if so try another company

it will sit in limbo mate till u get another car no matter how long

ask insurance when you cancel policy for proof of no claims.they will send you it youll lose this yrs ncb unless you pay premium for this yr.then i think you have 2 yrs to use it to insure another car.after that youll be starting from scratch.

Most insurance company's only accept no claims discounts that are under 2 years old. So if you don't insure again within 2 years you loose it all! I'm going to Uni this year and looked into it as I have 2 years on my insurance now, but looks like it won't be accepted when I finish my course!

It's always worth ringing the company and kicking up a fuss and say another company is cheaper or something like that. Check the small print or the FAQ on any insurers website.
