did not get renewal in mail, tags were due Jan 31 went today and they want $324.00 in late fees unless I give them a good reason why I was late

the state is not responsible for you not renewing your regrisrtation, the notice that you get is a courtesy notice, if you are in CA the reg fees just doubled, sorry, you could always say that you were kidnapped and held hostage in ethiopia without a passport, and could not get back into the country |

bayarea is correct. The DMV calls it a "curtesy notice". You are responsible for keeping your address with them current. The DMV doesn't forward anything, even if you've set it up with the post office to have your mail forwarded.
They used to accept "not received" as a reason, but California needs every nickle it can get it's hands on. |
