What is a good first car for some one who has just passed their test?

Some cheap little old corolla or 323. They're tough, and you can knock it about without having big bills to fix it. Plenty of spares, new and used, and most mechanics can work on them easily. Lots of hot up kits about, and they're easy on the fuel. they can carry surprising loads, and even tow quite a bit. They have most of the fruit too.

We bought my daughter a Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 - she's on her dad's insurance (fully comp but will be building up her own no claims) for about Â£425 per annum. Corsa's are pretty reliable, but make sure if you're buying an old one that you take someone along to the garage with you who knows something about cars - as dealers will try and rip you off if they think you're not too knowledgeable. I bought my wife a Vauxhall Corsa 1.0L Cheap Road tax, cheap insurance Â£625 Fully comp 1 day after passing her test) and lots of MPG using it for short local runs

I've just got a Peugeot 206 (2003 model) it's actually cheaper to insure and run than the Daewoo Matiz I had before and looks much more like a "real" car! lol
I chose it because of the low insurance group because my kids drive it too - however be careful it does depend on the model of 206. If you are in the UK you can find the insurance group for all cars here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/

Peugoet 206 is good, or try a honda jazz. the honda is a VERY reliable car with low fuel and maintainance and will give you many happy years. Enjoy the crazy world of car driving and let me share with you some wise words I learnt from the people of Tanzania: the only driver on the road is you, all the others may not be qualified.

Citroen C1. Compare the prices and specification. It beats all comers for safety and economy. It's green too! (environmentally of course).

You'll need something with a low insurance group.

Possibly a diesel, you'll get more miles to the gallon. Something older.

Maybe about 10 years old? You don't want to be forking out a lot of money just in case you prang it.
