Say my excess is £500 it says I have to pay the first £500 of any claim.
So I don't understand, do I pay the first £500 if I claim or if someone claims against me?

The amount the (if you have an accident) you have to pay out yourself for repairs before the insurance company pays anything, so...
Say you have and accident and the repeair bill is £1000, and your excess is £250. You pay the first £250 and the insurance company pays the rest
P.S. If the accidents not your fault you can claim this back off the other driver. |

Both of these. However, if the other party is found to be fully responsible and their insurance pays the lot, your excess should also be paid by them. |

If they are successful yes or if you make a claim you have to pay the first £500 BUT THAT IS RECOVERABLE FROM THE OTHER PARTY IF THE ACCIDENT WAS THERE FAULT sorry didn't mean to shout |

You have to pay on the occasion of every claim made your fault or not.
The insurance companies will sort out the details but you may even have to make a special claim to get the excess back against the other party if not recovered in the process.
It is monies you have paid not the insurance company so you may have to recover it if the insurance company fail to. |

The excess you have to pay is part of the repairs or compensation to another driver IF You are at fault. You do not pay the excess if the accident was not your fault. |

Only if you claim against your fully comprehensive policy. You do not pay the excess if someone makes a third party claim against you. |
