autoinsurance.maclenet.com - try this one. I have their car insurance and, as I know, they can provide such a service.

It's absolutely nothing to do with law, it's down to the wording of your policy. You MUST read your policy wording for confirmation, but basically;
If you have fully comprehensive insurance on a vehicle, you will USUALLY (but not always) be covered to drive any other vehicle (there are usually maximum insurance group & value levels) with THIRD PARTY ONLY cover, PROVIDING that the car you wish to drive is already covered by it's own insurer's policy.
You WILL NOT have fully comp cover on any other vehicle, and
you WILL NOT be covered to drive any uninsured vehicle.

I'd like to refer Timbo to the lady on here in court yesterday for assuming the other car didn't have to have insurance. Guaranteed you're wrong, the car MUST have a policy unless you have trade insurance. Trust me, with 25 years experience.

Kerry K has it correct. But remember that third party does not insure the car you are driving only other cars.

Read your insurance policy - make sure it covers you to drive other cars that are not owned or hired by you.

The law is you must have insurance to drive the car you are driving.

Your specific insurance policy will say if you can drive other peoples cars (with their permission).
Most companies these days seem to be scrapping this clause so check your insurance documents carefully before you do so.

Fully comp or not, in your policy there is an option that lets you drive other peoples cars using your insurance. It should be stated in your policy if you opted for this or not.

I know when i changed my insurance last year it asked me this and i said yes. As i use my managers car at work sometimes to pick things up, and friends cars as well (he has bmw). Better than driving my pug 206 lol

Normally if you have fully comp it will let you drive other people's cars on a third party basis, provided they are insured for their vehicle fully comp too.

But it all depends on the insurer - a quick call to your insurer will answer the question :o)

Kerry K
usually if you have fully comprehensive car insurance, you can drive other people's cars on a third party basis under your own insurance

I must reiterate what others have said, you must read your particular policy very carefully and if in doubt ring your insurers. That is the ONLY way to be certain what you are covered for. It varies and a lot of insurers are putting restrictive clauses on it or scrapping it altogether.

Don't, for your own sake, fall into the trap of making assumptions based on the dubious advice of others. More than one have found themselves in court for doing exactly that.

It depends on your insurer. In the past, most comprehensive policies have provided the basic minimum third party cover to the policyholder (not any other driver named in the policy) to drive a car borrowed from somebody else if you're not already covered by their insurance. However, in order to cut costs a lot of insurers have withdrawn that additional cover. So the only thing you can do is to read your documents. If you're covered to drive somebody else's car it will say so on the insurance certificate. If it doesn't say so, you're not covered.

WelshLad
It states on your policy, if unsure a quick call to your insurance company will clarify.

welcome news
1) Whether you have 'driving other cars' does NOT depend on whether you have comprehensive cover or not. TPFT policies may have driving other cars cover.

2) It depends more on your age and, to some extent on your occupation as well as the insurance company you are with. Lookm at your certificate of motor insurance for permission - it is usually near the top under the section 'person or person's entitled to drive'

3) Cover is third party only - there is no cover for loss or damage to the car being driven.

4) The car you are driving does NOT have to have insurance arranged by its owner per se - although rules have/are changing to force people who own cars to insure them.

5) The Road traffic act merely states that there must be a policy in force to cover "that use by that person on that vehicle' and driving other cars extension does meet these requirments.

6) Problems will occur, however, if you leave the vehicle on the road after having driven it. Are you still 'using' the vehicle?

Normally, your policy also insures you to drive other people's cars (with their permission), with third party only coverage. So any accidents you initiate, you are not covered. Someone else hits you, you're covered. Depends how much the other person trusts your driving!

My partner and I drive each other's cars under this clause.

Generally, you can drive someone else's vehicle with 3rd party cover, if you are not a named driver, and have been provided with the owner's permission.

Unfortunately some here had got this wrong again.
I have fully comp cover on a bike a car and a van. All of the policies cover me to drive anything similar as long as I do not own it or hire it. The cover is third party only and the car DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE ANYONE ELSES INSURANCE ON IT.
I have recently checked this with the three insurance companies, all different companies AND ALL CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS THE CASE. I was prompted to check due to the wrong answers about this coming up on here just about every other day

The law states that the miminum requirement is to have third party only cover. If stopped by the Police you should be able to show that you have this if it is on your insurance certificate and it will be if it is covered for you.

This will not be the last time so regulars expect to see this answer again soon!

Does anyone know what which insurance companies will let me drive other cars on my policy? I am due for renewal with Quinn Direct but they wont let me drive other cars anymore due to the fact that i am not 25.
