What makes a loud squeal when I start my car???

Some ideas to consider (you have a warranty remember)

Serpentine belt left too loose from the factory.

Water pump defective (bearing squeal)

Power steering pump low on fluid or defective or belt loose.

I would just take it in and see if your warrenty qualifies u for a loaner and tell them to check all that stuff. Your car is brand new and let the mechanic say something to u. Also remember it is possible this noise is common and not related to anything defective in which case at least you will have the service call on record in case it gets worse and u have to take it back in to the dealer.

I agree, a Corolla is a helluva lot better than a Hyundai.

The only thing that squeels under the hood of a car is the belts. Contrary to one of the answers above, I don't know of any car that doesn't have a belt. Whether it's a flat belt or a v-belt, most if not all cars have belts. And they squeel when something isn't right.

It could be that your car is so new the tolerances in the idler bearing are real tight, and when its lubricant is cold it doesn't turn as freely as it should. Or it didn't get lubricant from the factory (but that's unlikely). It also could be an anomaly with the AC clutch assembly.

A good auto parts store sells a stethescope (like doctors have) that's designed to listen to your engine. I use mine quite a bit, it's really good for finding where noises are coming from in your engine.

It sounds like your noise is loud, but when the squeeling stops, there may be a noise you can't hear unless you zero in on it with your mechanics stethescope.

You might have to leave it at the dealer over night so that they can hear for themselves. Any dealer can arrange to do that.

Give a call anyway, as there could be a service notice from Hyundai regarding a known defect. If so, the dealer will put it right straight away and you won't need to leave it over night.

check the rest of the belts, or check for damage on anything else. thats all i can say. :)

Being it's brand new, I would doubt the belt unless there is something lodged up in there to make the belt slip. Take a good look. Next time if you can, have someone looking under the hood when you start it. Good luck.

sounds like a bad belt to me. ask them to check all of the belts, if it is loose or worn or defective the will be able to see the problem, they do not have to hear it. Describe the problem to them like you did here, and let them take a peek under the hood.

Take it to the dealer anyway. Even though it wont squeal while you're there, they can check for any problems that might be causing it.

pop the hood turn on the engine. look at the belts see if there is any chunks missing or wear. if not go to a local store and get belt dressing. seeing its an 06' shouldnt be a problem

it probably has something to do with a belt. either timing or serpentine. when they are too tight or loose they will make that sound. you should be able to tell the dealer and have them fix for nothing if it's only a 06'

Maybe this is a common problem, so if you call they will tell you that and know what it is. Maybe not. Best thing to do is drop it off at the dealer overnight and make sure the problem is listed visibly on the drop- off envelope so that whoever gets in it the next day to move it is paying attention for the noise. In lieu of that, if you need to prove the noise is happening, what about video taping it?

It does sound like a belt, but it's a new car, so it would seem odd to have a belt problem. That's the first thing that comes to mind.

Look for a cat cought in the fan belt. What a mess it makes!

we had a car that was doing that and it was the water pump going out...but that car was like 15 years old at the time...best bet is to take it to the dealer while it's still under the dealerships warrenty...you won't pay for nothing that way...

loose or worn belt usually...also, most cars havent had a fan belt in years....the fans are electric, most of the time the serpentine belt is warn or loose
