In 6 months, I'm going to take my road test, and God willing get my licence and buy my car, now I know insurance rates are high since I'm a new driver, which one is the best for me? My dad said according to him his insurance goes up automatically, but I want it in my own name, without involving him in anyway, what do I do? Thanks!

The most helpful thing that I did when I first got my car insurance was to take the phone book out and call around to all the local insurance rates. Make sure you have all your vehicle infomation on hand (Make,Model,Year) and ask for a rate quote. When I called around for myself, the insurance company I ended up going with was about $400 less per 6 months than the highest quote. I was suprised by the difference in rates between insurance companies. When you're getting your quotes you might also ask to find out if any of the insurance companies offer good student discounts or discounts for taking a driver's ed course. |

it would be better to get added on to your parents insurence then going alone as a new driver. unless you make loads of money the rate will crush you.. Offer to help out with the insurence bump when you get added onto your parents. Yes it will push theirs up but at least yo uwill be able to afford it |

If you are of age, you just walk into an insurance agency and ask for it. You will want to shop around, certainly.
If you are not of age (under 18) then forget it. You'll have to rely on old Dad. |

Honestly, just put your name on your dad's insurance. If you're just getting your first car, you are going to need all the help you can get. These things are expensive and if you can get a break by putting your name on your dad's account, then do it. It will be whole lot cheaper than doing it on your own. BUT, if you don't want to do that, then go to Progressive.com and type in your information. They'll give you the rates for other companies as well as their own. That's a place to start. Then you can call the companies directly and have them give you a verbal quote over the phone. It doesn't cost anything and it only takes around ten minutes per phone call.
Good luck! |

I agree with the first answer. The problem is your going to be a new driver which in the insurance companies eyes that means high risk driver. When I was looking for quotes the cheapest I could find for myself was 700-800 every 6 months and they had good reputations from what I heard. Go to www.progressive.com and search. Good Luck |

If you live at home--you go on the family policy. yes you can and should get one of youyr own--just because of the car being yours and you being the responsible party. A cheap policy is just that--CHEAP---probably doesn't do anymore than give you the card to put in your car. Be very careful and ask about what is definitely covered and what is not. ..especially if you hurt or kill someone. Cheap is a lousy way to go--you could pay for the rest of your life without a good policy. |

If you have a permit, then get on your Dad's insurance policy. In most cases, a permit will not increase his rate.
In six months, when you go get a policy in your name, you will qualify for a lower rate since you have insurance history.
Shop, shop, shop around. There are a lot of insurance companies and you'll find a rate within your budget. Or, if you don't know about insurance, find a local agent. You give em the information once, and they will shop for you. |
