I'm 18, and plan on getting my license in about two months. But money is a little tight now at my house, and when my brother got his license on his sixteenth birthday (two years ago) the car insurance my parents pay for jumped an extra 1200 dollars a year.

Get good grades so you can get the "good student" discount, put your name on your parents' cheapest and oldest car only, and tell the company exactly how many miles a month you plan to drive and where.
Also, a good resource is this one...

there are things you can do.
1. stay out of trouble. problems that you have will reflect on your insurance premium.
2. get good grades (honor role). most insurance companies offer a rate reduction to teens who get good grades. studies have shown that teens who study are less likely to get in trouble (and as an added benefit are more likely to make lots of money as adults)
3. take a drivers ed/safety course. most companies offer discounts for that.
4. stay in school. once you graduate high school, go to college, tech school, community college. most insurance companies offer discounts to students in general (and as an added benefit, people with extra schooling tend to make extra money and find better jobs later in life) |

Your best hope is to get older, over 25 is where the next break comes. |

Teens are charged a lot more for car insurance. You'd need to check with various car insurance companies and get the best deal. Start with www.CarInsuranceQuotes.com. This is very easy to do. Just fill in your information online and within minutes you'll get quotes from reputed car insurance companies all over America. You can compare all these quotes and choose the best deal for you. You can also use their customer service if you have more specific queries. Car insurance is expensive for teens, but it's also a matter of finding the best deal as not all car insurance companies offer the same deal. |

$1200 isn't bad for another young driver. That's about what my insurance is now.
Try taking some safety courses like defensive driving. That'll lower it a bit. Also, since you're 18 it'll be lower than your brothers since you're older. Some companies take grades into account so try to keep good grades up.
And be sure to shop around for quotes. |

I'm in the same position as you too. I don't think therees anything you can really do about it. I do know that if you took drivers ed class then it gets you 10% off. But otherwise you must NEVER get in an accident or your screwed. Just plain stay away from cops too. |
