hey i'm just a bit curious here
my mum has a vauxhall astra 05 plate with fully comprehensive insurance (so other drivers are allowed to drive it etc...) the catch is the driver must be over 25 as outlined on the policy booklet
i'm only 18... but obviously cause the car is insured it wont trigger the ANPR's or anything but say if the police stopped me for a routine stop, will they identify the fact I'm 18 or could I bluff and say 'but it's fully comp' i have my own car that i'm insured on
and BEFORE anyone says 'don't drive uninsured, your selfish etc..' i don't drive the car at all, i've got a modified almera which is my pride and joy anyway
but i'm just curious what would happen?

oh - i know i could be charged with that but would they on the spot know? ... like, would the PNC have information about what age it is allowed to drive?

The PNC would not have the age information but the Police have the ability and contact information to check on the phone right there and then to see if you are really covered and they do know to ask about age restrictions.
You may be able to drive it anyway on your own cover but check the policy first as often at your age you do not get this facility. If you do get it then it will be 3rd party only. |

No they would know because it's standard normally on all fully com insurance that you must be 25 or over but if she put you on as a named driver then you could. |

Don't pretend that you have no intentions of trying it. You wouldn't be asking if you didn't.
Despite the impression they give most police are not stupid. They know that almost all any driver policys state the drivers must be over 25 and they also know from you acne and bumfluff goatee that you are not said age. Another thing they know is that on general suspicion, if they pull a young lad in a new/expensive car there is about a 80% chance that they will get a result. |

You could be charged with driving without insurance as the policy strictly states that only drivers over 25 allowed.
You could get added as a casual driver which would require a change to the policy.

They would know your not 25, because of the D.O.B on your license. Not a lot of 18yr olds look 25yrs anyway so they would check your age. Most policies have this rule. Same as if you had your own policy and want to drive another car, you may not be covered.
What would happen: Car will be towed away. Regardless if your mum can come and pick it up. Once it has been towed, you will need to pay the penalty to have it released from the compound. The fine goes up for X amount of time it is there. If no-one recovers it, it will be crushed. If its fairly new, it gets auctioned (police).
As for you, fixed penalty fine and points to your license...moral of the story, stupid if you risked it.
Also, police love to pull 18yr old males over more frequently. So it is not worth the risk.
Also as for 'bluffing' big mistake. Police hate liars and you just fuel their fire if your not honest from the start. 'Giving false details' is a law itself...With this whole scenario if you have really annoyed the officer, they will just send the car to the compound and give you a courts summons. Which means more points, bigger fine, court costs and the cost to have the car released...
They would ask you if it is your policy. You would say no, its your mums. Then they would check if your on her policy...
It will work out cheaper to insure yourself on it for the day should you need to drive it. |

If you have fully comp on your Almera, then you can drive the Astra (3dr Party) based on your insurance, with the owners consent.
On the original hypothetical issue, I agree, you wouldn't 'ping' an ANPR camera BUT If the police see you driving, they can do a check on the insurance related to that car i.e driving restrictions etc, from the Insurance database and form their own conclusions from that. That would then be their basis for a routine stop and you would then be asked about your licence and your insurance position, which they can then check immediately. |
