What would be the best convertible car for a 17yo (UK)?

Im turning 17 in a few months, ive been working for my dads company for quite a while and hes treating me to a company car, (ie up to £400 a month).
Ive always wanted a mercedes SLK, its well within budget surprisingly, and its stunning. so everything was looking good - UNTIL I FOUND OUT THE INSURANCE - 15,000 they want, that's ridiculous, and its the best one on confused.com, even with my mum fronting it. it seems like any decent car just has massive insurance, i have to pay that myself - to some extent, somebody help me?! =[

When I first passed I drove a 1.2 1996 Corsa; no mods, alloys or anything else and the insurance was about Â£1500 so hate to rain on your parade but you ain't gonna get that SLK till you are 30+; why do you think that you only see old guys with no hair driving them?

Oh and you would never get insured on a provisional licence driving an SLK.

well 15'000 isnt rediculous for a 17 year old driving a high proformance car, as you are more likely to write it off or some one else's,as for insurance for a male at 17 you are talking 1200 minimum and thats for a cheap car, if you go for anything over 1.6 and worth a few thousand youre looking at 2500+

Eh? First of all, whats wrong with a Peugeot, Renault, Ford? Just because you have the money to buy a mercedes doesn't mean you need it straight away. Have you even passed your driving test?! Just get a small car first of all. How do you know that you will be able to make enough money to pay for insurance and petrol?! Good lord. Start from the bottom like everyone has to and not think so high. Once you've worked your way up you'll be able to decide.

convertibles are very dangerous, especially since you'll be wanting to show off your car to your buddies. and it's not just your age ( although 17 is young for a convertible) even adults like to show out in them, this week a man turned his over broke his spine... ouch

A Vauxhall Tigra might be a reasonable bet at your age.

Go for a classic car - because classic car insurance is usually much lower than for a more normal car (because classic drivers usually look after their cars).

If you can afford to buy an SLK, you could probably afford an earlier generation SL, either the W113 (1963-1971) or W107 (1971-1989).

Alternatively, you could consider a Triumph TR6, Spitfire, GT6 or Stag, a Sunbeam Alpine or Tiger, or an MGB.

Once you've got a couple of years experience and some no-claims discount, you can consider the SLK again.

You will not get insurance for a convertable at your age as you are an inexperienced driver & the car will probably be parked outside the house. (security) Also, take into consideration the cc of the engine and the availability of spare parts if anything goes wrong. All these points make up the insurance premium. When i was your age the best i could get was an old & average hard-top Fiesta.

a convertible? in the uk? are you daft. come down to earth and get one that you can afford the insurance on !!!

erm yes dont buy a posh car. the fact that youre male and young means either people wont insure you or it will be through the roof. you should start with a crap car and build up a good reputation as a driver.
