It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - autoinsurance.maclenet.com |

Despite what new/newish car owners would have you believe - or possibly believe themselves - there are hundreds of thousands of hard up motorists who drive nothing other than sub £1000 oldies and rely on them. I drive 35k a year so am on the road more than your average motorist and i see far more sub 3 year old cars broken down at the road side than i do 10 - 15 year old ones!
One of my neighbours daughters runs an N plate astra with 130k on the clock which she has used daily for her 60 mile commute to the hospital where she is a nurse. She paid about 650 for it nearly 2 years ago and it has cost her nothing in repairs and the first problem she has had was yesterday when the battery expired. (still did not cost her anything as my son had a suitable spare lying around doing nothing in the back shed which he gave her).
An old micra would certainly be a good bet as these do not attract the boy racers and have often been cherished by an older motorist or been a families second car. Personally i would be wary of any old Corsa as most will have had 2 or 3 Jack the Lad owners already who have thrashed them. |

If she does not have another 1500 ish for the insurance, or can afford 150+ a month, she will have to save up some more.
Going to have to stick to low power small cars like a 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa and definitely not over 1.2 litre |
