When Purchasing a Vehicle From a Car Dealer (Used), How Does the Insurance Info Work?

If I wanted to purchase a used car from a dealer and did NOT have insurance, would I have to purchase insurance BEFORE purchasing a car (ex. have a vehicle insured in my name then use that info for the other vehicle and/or switch the vehicle info in the account) OR do you purchase a vehicle and THEN purchase the insurance?

I'm new to the insurance bit as my car is insured in my stepfather's name and he now lives in a different state so I don't know anything about this stuff! Also, how long do the dealer temp tags last? Thanks!

You get insurance before you purchase the car. They will ask for information like the VIN number and such. I believe the temp dealer tags last for around a month.

I know for a fact that you need insurance to drive your car off the lot of a dealership. It is illegal to drive without some kind of insurance, and almost all dealerships will make sure you have insurance.

Now, if you buy it from a person, i don't think they would care too much.

Simply have your insurance company "bind coverage" before you pick up the car. You will have to have the VIN when you call for insurance

You can not legally drive a car that is not covered by liability insurance. Whether or not the seller lets you drive it doesn't matter. You need to call an insurance company or broker, give them your personal information, the vehicle description including the VIN number, pay a deposit, and they will issue a binder showing that the car is insured. If you do it in person they will hand you the binder. If you do it by phone or the internet they will fax it to you or the dealer. The car does not have to be registered to you at the time the binder is issued. It simply shows that you have insurance on that car. If for some reason the deal falls through you can ask for a refund or switch the insurance to another car.

Go ahead and try buying the vehicle without the insurance and then see if they ask for it. If the car is being financed, insurance is required, but I don't think insurance is needed to drive the vehicle off the lot. I would doubt insurance is required if you are paying for the vehicle before it is driven off the lot. When you buy insurance, you can pay monthly from many insurance companies, if price is a problem.

I just bought a pickup from someone privately and he did not ask for insurance, so there is no law in this state that the sale of a vehicle is not to be done without insurance checking. If you pay for the vehicle completely, why would the dealer care if you had insurance? Only if the vehicle is being financed, and then collision is definitely required.
