When a person has auto insurance on a car, is it just the one driver that is insured or anyone who drives it?
Find answers to your legal question.

When a person has auto insurance on a car, is it just the one driver that is insured or anyone who drives it?

My girlfriend has a car in her name and she obviously has insurance. She is the only person with insurance in their name for the car. Would I be covered if I were to drive it occasionally? I don't have my own car or any kind of auto insurance in my name. Thanks.

There are tons of sites where you can get a free insurance quote. http://www.easyautoinsuranceguide.com It only takes roughly 10 minutes to do.

Do you live with your girlfriend? If so, then she needs to list you on her policy. If you don't live with her and you only drive her vehicle occasionally, then you are covered.

It depends. In NY most policies state that anyone who has the "insured's" permission to drive the car has coverage under the policy if they have an accident. an "insured" is the named insured and any drivers listed on the policy. Some states allow companies to exclude drivers or cover only those who are listed on the policy. Her insurance agent can tell her for sure.

There are so many state laws and different policies out there, the only way to know is to ask her agent.
But once they identify you as a sometimes driver, her rates may go up.
My policy covers other drivers, provided they are using the car for something that I wanted them to do, or if I am in the car also.
But hers may not.

most insurance companies allow you to drive the vehilce as a permissive use. That means as long as she has given permission then you should be covered.

She should check with her agent just to make sure though.

Think about it. If she was sick and had to to the er and you drover her and had an accident, the insurance company would not cover the loss???? Most of the major insurance companies do not operate this way. Again, check with her agent.

Yes, you can drive her vehicle if you have a valid drivers license. If you live with her, you must be named on her policy. Anyone with a valid drivers license, not living in her household, may drive her vehicle without being named on her policy.

Depends on the policy she bought. There are many different stipulations. You need to read up and make sure your covered before you drive it.

Normal policies allow different drivers as long as there is permissive use.

You are only insured as a driver if her insurance states that you are. Her insurance company will add you for a nominal monthly fee.

basically no you are not covered to drive her car the only way you can becover is 1 be named driver on her policy 2 have your own car insurance and be cover to drive any other vehicle 3rd party or 3 be insured temp on her policy for say a week/month at a time if you are planning long journeys and want to share the driving

If you are not named you are not insured.

well if your name isn't on the insurance then no, unless she has Allstate insurance

It sounds like she it just in her name so "NO" you would not be covered!
